Así lo defiende un estudio elaborado por un laboratorio de Nuevo México y difundido por la cadena de televisión Vuz. Bajo el título Beards are as dirty as toilets (“Las barbas son tan sucias como un WC”) el estudio tomó muestras de varios voluntarios barbudos y las analizó en un laboratorio.

Entre los gérmenes y bacterias encontrados en la suciedad acumulada, los microbiólogos hallaron también partículas de excrementos.
 

Ya se habían encontrado partículas fecales en smartphones, cepillos de dientes o incluso agua bendita, pero es estremecedor descubrir que este tipo de suciedad se acumula en el vello facial que con tanto esmero han cultivado algunos jóvenes.

No es la primera vez que las barbas son tachadas de ser poco higiénicas. Estudios anteriores ya habían certificado que los hombres con vello en la cara son más propensos a padecer infecciones de la piel y a transmitirlas a otros.

El microbiólogo y profesor en la Universidad de Aston, Anthony Hilton, afirmó que unas 20.000 bacterias habitan en el rostro de los barbudos.

La solución para reducir la cantidad de suciedad acumulada no puede ser más evidente: lavarse las manos antes de acariciar tan preciado vello.

Sin embargo, existen otros estudiosos como Hugh Pennington, experto en bacteriología en la Universidad de Aberdeen, o el profesor Pennington, que defienden que la barba no entraña riesgos para la salud y que las bacterias que acumula son las mismas que las de la piel.
