Papúa Nueva Guinea informó este lunes a la Organización de Naciones Unidas (ONU) de que más de 2.000 personas fueron sepultadas en el enorme corrimiento de tierras que arrasó un pueblo.

“El deslizamiento sepultó a más de 2.000 personas vivas y causó una gran destrucción”, indicó el centro nacional de catástrofes papú a la oficina del organismo internacional en la capital, Port Moresby.

La aldea de Yambali, situada en la ladera de una colina en la provincia de Enga, fue casi completamente arrasada cuando colapsó parte del monte Mongalo la mañana del viernes pasado, sepultando numerosas casas y las personas que dormían en su interior. El domingo, la ONU había estimado en 670 los muertos provocados por el desastre.

Según el centro nacional de catástrofes papú, “la situación continúa siendo inestable pues el deslizamiento de tierras continúa avanzando lentamente, poniendo en peligro tanto a los rescatistas como a los posibles sobrevivientes”.

Horas antes, el alto funcionario de la ONU, Serhan Aktoprak, señaló que los rescatistas están “corriendo contra el tiempo” para encontrar sobrevivientes.
